Miami-Dade Commissioners will vote Tuesday on a resolution that would increase the penalty of hit-and-run drivers.

The item would impose a minimum seven-year sentence for drivers who leave the scene of a crash involving an injury and a 10-year sentence when the diver is under the influence or causes the death of a person in the accident.

The vote was proposed by Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz, and highlights the current Florida statues that do not impose a mandatory minimum jail time to the drivers who are found guilty of leaving the scene of a crash.

The proposed item gives various examples including Michele Traverso, who was sentenced to 364 days in prison and two years of community control for leaving the scene of a crash that killed cyclist Aaron Cohen and injured cyclist Enda Welsh.

The proposed vote would also eliminate probation, as an alternative to jail for hit-and-run drivers.
