A 5-year-old girl was in critical condition after she fell out of a 7th-story Oakland Park apartment window Friday night, authorities said.
After the child survived the fall at the Bridgewater Place apartments, on Northwest 44th Street near Commercial Boulevard, her mother and two other people drove her to Broward Health Medical Center, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said.
Investigators said that at about 8 p.m. the girl’s brother went to check on her, and found her walking on the windowsill in her bedroom. As she tried to make her way back to her bed, she fell into the screen and out the window.
Kelly Williams, 8, told NBC 6 he heard a commotion outside and looked over his balcony.
“I was playing my video game and then I heard, ‘Don’t let my baby die!’ So I went on the patio and I saw the baby on the ground. They were picking it up,” he said.
A mother and her 14-year-old daughter were the first to come to the girl’s rescue. Moments later, the victim’s mother came outside. All three took the child in a car to Broward Health, Jachles said.
Authorities initially identified the child as a boy.
Authorities are investigating, but they said the incident appears to be an accident.
