Two Arrested After Stolen ATM Dumped in Davie Canal

Two men are facing grand theft charges after witnesses saw an ATM that was stolen in Pembroke Pines get dumped into a canal in West Davie, police said Monday.

Davie police say the ATM was stolen in the overnight hours of Saturday night by two men, identified as Kevin Bass, 27, and Gary Hrinda, 24.

During their appearances in bond court Monday, Broward Circuit Judge John Hurley said the pair took the standalone ATM from a fair in Pembroke Pines and loaded it into a pickup truck.

The two took $2,000 from the machine and went to the Hard Rock Casino to gamble, Hurley said. W#hen they returned from the casino to Bass' home in West Davie, they threw the ATM in the canal, Hurley said.

Police said witnesses saw two suspects dump the broken ATM into the canal Sunday.

The witnesses called police and directed them to the ATM and the truck where it came from, police said.

Officers encountered and detained two people at a camper behind a home in the 13300 block of Southwest 28th Street, but one suspect, identified by Hurley as Bass, stayed inside the camper, police said.

A search warrant was obtained and was served by the Davie Police Special Response Team, which took the suspect into custody without incident, police said.

When Bass was arrested he had $700 in cash, Hurley said.

Bass was charged with grand theft, littering and possession of cannabis, and was being held on $7,500 bond. Hrinda was charged with grand theft and littering and was being held on $6,000 bond. It was unknown whether they have attorneys.

The incident is still being investigated, police said.
