A Riviera Beach man who fell and hit his head when he was shot by police with a Taser as he climbed a fence while trying to escape is on life support and is not expected to recover, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Tony Brown, 43, remains on life support at St. Mary's Medical Center following the March 30 incident at the city police station, the Post reported.

Brown, a convicted sex offender who was convicted of lewd or lascivious conduct with a child under 16 years of age in Okeechobee County in 2005, was arrested after he failed to appear in court and was found inside a stolen pickup truck, according to an arrest report obtained by the Post.

When Brown was brought to the city police station, his handcuffs were removed, allowing him to break free. Brown kicked open a back door and ran into a back parking lot where he started climbing a 8-foot-tall barbed-wire fence.

As Brown climbed the fence, an officer shot him with the Taser, injecting him with 50,000 volts o electricity, and Brown fell from the fence, hitting his head, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.

The arrest report didn't say why Brown's handcuffs were removed, the Post reported. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
