A man who was struck by a car outside a Miami restaurant Tuesday in a crash that killed another pedestrian remains in critical condition, police said Wednesday.
Carlos M. Characa, 58, remained at Jackson Memorial Hospital a day after the crash outside Laguna Seafood Restaurant at 2800 Northwest 7th Avenue, Miami Police said. The second pedestrian, 62-year-old Dario F. Hernandez, was killed at the scene.
The driver, 61-year-old Henry T. Maffett, was in serious condition, police said.

Police say Maffett was behind the wheel of a white Dodge Durango when it struck the pedestrians on the sidewalk outside the restaurant before slamming into a liquor store next door.
Another person who was inside the liquor store was checked out at the scene but not badly injured. Surveillance video from inside the store showed the person narrowly escaped injuries when the vehicle plowed into the building.

Miami-Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll said the driver was "confused and slightly combative" and was going to be tested for driving under the influence. One witness said the driver looked like he was experiencing something resembling a seizure.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash and are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
