"As the nursing staff was going to provide medication to the victim who has been identified as Robert Verser, a 73-year-old black male, they noticed that he was not breathing and was suffering from injuries.," Miami-Dade Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said.
"They called homicide out and at that point is when were able to determine that this was not caused by a fall. It was caused because somebody had in fact battered the victim."
Police were interviewing Verser's roommate, who admitted he struck Verser and was taken into custody.
"It's kind of scary, specially having a family member in the home or in the facility. I mean, that's crazy," said Reva Roberts, a daughter of a patient.
