Wearing blue, her favorite color, friends and family gathered Saturday at Kaely Camacho's grave site in Southwest Miami-Dade for the one-year anniversary of her death.
The group released butterflies in her honor.
"The butterfly resembles her for beauty, and it also resembles flight and gracefulness," said Camacho's cousin Ethan Palomino.
Camacho, 13, was killed last year in a hit-and-run crash in Southwest Miami-Dade.
Her father's car was struck by a Land Rover on Southwest 184th Street by Sandor Guillen, who has pleaded not guilty to charges including vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.
"Today is about celebrating Kaely's life, and through our actions we can remember her," said mom Angela Camacho. "A lot of good has come and people have come together over the past year in bringing awareness to drinking and driving."
The family has raised $28,000 in Camacho's name for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Camacho was also honored Friday in a street-naming ceremony in Palmetto Bay. Southwest 162nd Street between 80th and 78th Streets, near Camacho's former school Southwood Middle, was named after her.
"Her memory will always live on forever," Angela said.
Saturday also marks older sister Breeann Camacho's junior prom night. Breeann, who was in the car the day of the crash, will be wearing a blue dress in honor of her sister. She's running for queen and said she hopes to use that title to send a message.
"Please don't get behind the vehicle if you're not sober, because you can take someone's life like Kaely's," Breeann said. "I really want my fellow classmates to see what I'm going through right now. It all had to do with something one hundred percent avoidable."
