Police are investigating after a man was hospitalized following a police-involved shooting in northeast Miami-Dade Thursday morning.

The shooting happened at a home in the 500 block of Northeast 176th Street when officers responded to a call of a stolen cell phone, Miami-Dade Police said.

When officers knocked on the door they got into a confrontation with a man identified as Jeffrey Paul, 32, also known as DJ Big Boy.

"As uniformed officers approached the residence they were confronted buy this individual who opened the door while holding a weapon," said police spokesman Javier Baez.

According to police, that weapon was a handgun. Investigators said officers then fired at Paul.

He was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he was in critical but stable condition, police said.

Some neighbors said they are surprised by what happened because they know Paul.

"This is a good guy and nothing like this happens on the block," said a neighbor who went by Tony. "For years, I've lived here, for over 25 years. He's a wonderful guy, he's a big guy, he can't do much of nothing cause he can hardly move."

Another neighbor, Monopoly Jignore Oglester, agreed.

"This is a very quiet neighborhood," he said. "People around here don't do stuff like that."
