Dade School District Throws Prom for Students With Autism

Dressed in their gowns and tuxedos -- senior prom is a special time for high school student everywhere, and for the third year, Miami Dade County Public Schools threw a massive party for more than 600 students with autism.

“Yeah its real crazy out here. It’s like everybody out here having fun from different districts yeah basically that’s all it is,” said Richard Guy Jr. a high school student.

With the DJ spinning some of the hottest songs, Natalie Sanz the organizer of this event says this prom is an opportunity for students to bond with their peers and learn some relevant social skills.

“The idea was to offers this where they could come feel comfortable with each other and have a great day,” said Sanz, a teacher North Miami Beach Senior High School. 

“The cowboy theme is fantastic. Its awesome and fantastic. I love cowboys!” said Tabrieo, another high school student.

It may have been 11 a.m., but these students enjoyed their prom and danced like they never had before.

“I went from table to table I danced with them. This is one of the happiest days of their lives. It’s just got to continue. This is about inspiring now the community to accept these beautiful human beings, to employ them, training to make them a part of the community as they we’ve made them part of our school system,” said superintendent Alberto CarvaIo.

Funded by community agencies and businesses, the prom was free for all students and everything from the pictures taking, dancing and crowning of the king and queen this prom was an unforgettable milestone for all.

“It feels kind pretty awesome!” said Tabrieo.
