A man involved in an Opa-locka shootout Thursday morning is being charged with second degree murder after a fight with his girlfriend escalated, officials said.

Timothy Shelton, 31, got into a fight with his girlfriend over the phone while he was at work, Miami-Dade Police said.

A short while after they hung up, the girlfriend's brother, 20-year-old George Livingston Jr., and a friend, 20-year-old Quontavis Smith, showed up at the business, police said.

The three got into an argument in the parking lot and Shelton shot at Livingston and Smith, according to police. Shelton immediately walked back into the business, unloaded his revolver and fled, officials said.

As Shelton was running away, he tossed the revolver into a canal, but was stopped by Opa-locka police shortly after, police said.

The pursuit left two schools, Nathan Young Elementary and Theodore and Thelma Gibson Charter, on lockdown.

Smith died on the scene, while Livingston was transported to Ryder Trauma Center where he later died, according to officials.
