The families that filed lawsuits over October's fatal Miami Dade College parking garage collapse in Doral reached settlements with the construction firms they sued, sources told NBC 6.
Because of confidentiality, the specific terms of the agreement were not made public.
The families were satisfied with the outcome of the case in light of the circumstances, sources said.
Attorneys for the general contractor Ajax Building Corp. did not immediately respond to telephone messages.
The five-story, $20 million concrete garage at Miami Dade College's west campus collapsed Oct. 10 in an accident that killed four construction workers. The body of one worker was not recovered for more than a week because the accident site was so unstable. The school's 8,000 students had to attend classes on other Miami-Dade campuses until January. No students were injured in the collapse.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration penalized five contracting companies for more than $38,000 in April after finding evidence of missing welds and grout in some support columns, failure to properly brace columns and failure to inspect 18 columns as required. OSHA also said contractors didn't follow project drawings and instructions.
On Wednesday, OSHA said four of the five companies cited by OSHA including the general contractor, accepted the penalites and findings and will pay a total of about $32,000 in fines.
