Pilot and flight instructor Ivan Popov, 22, of Pembroke Pines and student Kaitlyn Hildebrandt, 24, of Miami Beach were conducting training exercises when they had to land in the westbound lanes of I-75 at mile marker 31, FHP spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky said.

The Cessna 172 departed North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines headed for Naples, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said in an email. The pilot reported engine failure on the plane, which has a tail number of N718EH, she said.
