J.J. the gorilla took a sick day from Zoo Miami Thursday for his routine heart exam.
The 33-year-old lowland gorilla, who suffers from hypertension, spent the day off exhibit for a complete cardiac exam that included an echocardiogram and an electrocardiogram.
Dr. Alan Schwartz, who typically examines humans, performed the echocardiogram. He and a team of zoo veterinarians found the 475-pound ape in good condition, but said he needs to shed some weight.

The gorilla also received vaccinations, had his blood drawn and had his blood pressure taken.
He should return to the exhibit by the weekend after recovering from the anesthesia.
