A man was in fair and stable condition after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street in West Park early Friday, authorities said.
The 52-year-old Walter James was trying to cross the northbound lanes of State Road 7 at Southwest 26th Street when he was struck by a vehicle around 5 a.m., according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
The victim wasn't in the crosswalk when he was struck by the car, believed to be a silver Honda that is missing the cover for the driver's side mirror, the BSO said.
Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue took the man to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment. The crash caused the northbound lanes of State Road 7 at Hallandale Beach Boulevard to be closed early Friday.
"Oftentimes, it's nothing more than an accident, but by leaving the scene, now you're potentially facing criminal charges for not rendering aid to someone who is hurt," said Keyla Concepcion, sheriff's office spokeswoman.
Authorities are investigating the crash and are asking anyone with information to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
