A Broward sheriff’s detective has been suspended with pay following his arrest on the charge of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, the Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.

Detective John A. Brindle, 45, was taken into custody on Friday, accused of using his law enforcement position and intimidation to illegally obtain eight oxycodone pills, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators received information that Brindle was purchasing oxycodone pills without a prescription from a location in Oakland Park. Friday, detectives conducted surveillance of Brindle’s movements and when he was in possession of the pills, he was pulled over in a black Ford Taurus near Interstate 95 and Commercial Boulevard, the agency said.

The sheriff’s Internal Affairs and the Public Corruption Task Force arrested him on the controlled substance charge, the agency said. He has been suspended from his job, pending prosecution by the Broward State Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Jail records show he was freed from jail on $1,000 bond Saturday morning.

Brindle worked as a detective in Pompano Beach for seven years. He previously was employed at the Sheriff’s Office from September 1997 to July 2004, and was rehired in April 2005, the Sheriff’s Office said.
