A flood watch was in effect for parts of Miami-Dade and Broward through 10 p.m. Tuesday after heavy rains swept through the area overnight and more downpours were expected throughout the day.

The flood watch was in effect for coastal and metro Broward and Miami-Dade as rains were expected to move back into the area in the afternoon after an early break.

Heavy overnight rains left some areas flooded early Tuesday. Nearly nine inches of rain have fallen over portions of South Florida since Monday afternoon with another couple of inches expected through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

A threat for lightning and gusty winds will also be in the forecast Tuesday.

In west Miami-Dade, workers were pumping water out of a swamped parking lot in the 8100 block of Northwest 7th Street early Tuesday, and said it could take hours.

Florida Power and Light officials said 1,200 customers in Miami-Dade and 300 in Broward were without power early Tuesday, but crews were working around the clock to restore power.
