Cyclists Shot by BB Guns on Rickenbacker

Cyclists on the Rickenbacker Causeway now have a new worry to add to a growing list: BB guns and tacks.

Nolan Farhy said it happened to him while he was riding his bike down the bridge that connects Key Biscayne to the mainland.

"A car comes next to me and shoots me," Farhy said. "He just shot me from the seat. It's kind of like they were not expecting to shoot me but they just sort of saw the opportunity and they shot me.

Farhy said three teenagers pulled up next to him Thursday afternoon while he was in the bike lane and fired three times, hitting him in the back and leg.

"I saw them a little bit of laughing and smirking as they passed and then they just sped off," Farhy said.

Cyclists on the Transit Miami Facebook page said it also happened Friday to two other riders.

Another cyclist said a tack (left) punctured her tire Friday morning and that it happened to several others as well. The cyclists believe somebody planted the tacks in the bike lane.

The Rickenbacker, a popular stretch for cyclists in Miami, can already be pretty dangerous. Last year, Aaron Cohen died when a driver crashed into him and took off, and in 2010, Christophe LeCanne was killed in a hit-and-run as well.

Christina warren, another avid cyclist, said Miami is simply not a bike-friendly city.

"I have to say people really hate bikers in Miami," she said. "I mean every time I ride somebody flicks me off, somebody screams something out the window. It's constant."
