A man was seriously injured Friday in a police-involved shooting at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, a university spokeswoman said.

The man, who appeared to be homeless, was on the roof of a building at Research Park at FAU, when he apparently showed a knife to responding officers, said the spokeswoman, Lisa Metcalf.

"Preliminarily, it appears the suspect produced a knife and shots were fired," Metcalf said in a press release. The suspect was struck, she said.

None of the officers was injured, and no one else was involved in the incident. The wounded man was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, she said.

The events began about 10 a.m. Friday, when someone phoned the FAU Police Department to report that the man was on the roof, Metcalf said. The two officers found the man on the roof, and the subsequent encounter led to the shooting.

The incident didn't cause the campus to be placed on lockdown because the situation in an isolated area of the campus was under control.

The A.D. Henderson University School was on lockdown for nearly six minutes.

As part of procedure, the shooting is being investigated by the Boca Raton Police Department and the State Attorney's Office.
