Residents of several eastern Broward County cities were asked to boil their water before consuming it for at least 48 hours, officials said Wednesday.

"E-coli bacteria were detected in a Broward County well that supplies about one-half of the drinking water to Hallandale Beach," said an email statement from Hallandale Beach.

The alert includes Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Pembroke Park, West Park and Dania Beach. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Florida Power and Light were also part of the notice.

Officials said any water used for drinking or cooking should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute before consumption. Bottled water is also an alternative. Residents are safe to shower, but should keep the water out of their eyes and mouth, officials said.

"This “precautionary boil water notice” will remain in effect until the work is completed and a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink," the statement said.

Another alert will be issued when it's OK to drink the water again. Residents can call 954-831-3250 for additional information.
