A man the Broward Sheriff’s Office calls the “loose change robber” counted his change at a convenience store as he appeared to be making a purchase – but when the cash register opened, he grabbed money inside it and fled, the BSO said.
On Friday detectives released surveillance video of the incident, which happened on May 7 at about 7:15 p.m. at the Chevron gas station at 7100 W. McNab Road in North Lauderdale.
The man browsed around the store before he grabbed a drink and approached the checkout counter with a dollar bill and loose change, the BSO said in a statement.

He told the clerk he also wanted to buy a cigar, according to the BSO, and he handed the clerk money that included some of his change, the video shows.
But when the clerk opened the cash drawer, the suspect reached for and took cash within it, then dashed out of the store, the video shows.
He was seen getting into a gold four-door Toyota Camry that was a 1994 or 1995 model, the BSO said.
The agency said the man is in his early to mid-30s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, and has short, black hair with a receding hairline. He was last seen wearing denim shorts and a neon yellow shirt, with sunglasses on his forehead.
