Depression Strengthens Into TS Barry

Tropical Storm Barry formed Wednesday in the southern Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said.

At 5 p.m., it was about 70 miles east-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and was moving to the west at 6 miles per hour.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for El Lagarto to Barra de Nautla, Mexico.

A general westward track was forecast for the depression, with a decrease in forward speed expected Wednesday and Thursday. The center was expected to reach the coast of Veracruz on Thursday morning.

The storm was expected to produce total rainfall of 3 to 5 inches up to 10 inches in portions of southern Mexico.
