The U.S. Coast Guard helped seize about  $24 million worth of cocaine in the Caribbean Sea.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Royal Netherlands Navy and U.S. law enforcement seized 1,517 pounds of cocaine and detained three Dominican Republic natives on June 11 in the Caribbean Sea, the Coast Guard said.

The Miami surveillance aircraft was patrolling and found three men on a boat loitering about 105 miles from Ponce, Puerto Rico, authorities said.

When the men thought they had caught, they threw the contraband overboard, the Coast Guard said.

In total, about 20 bales of contraband were seized. The bales were taken to Puerto Rico, and the boat was destroyed.

U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations are leading a criminal investigation.

The seizure was part of Operation Unified Resolve, Operation Caribbean Guard and the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force.
