Authorities are investigating after a man was shot to death in North Lauderdale Monday night.

The man was found dead just before 11 p.m. in the 1600 block of Belmont Lane, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Authorities haven't said how the man died but neighbors said they heard what sounded like fireworks before they realized they were gunshots.

"I heard two big bangs, I'm thinking somebody's working on some construction work or something, I didn't know what was going on and I heard somebody screaming," neighbor Darrell Reid said.

Clive Ricketts identified the victim as his 27-year-old son-in-law. He said the man was the proud father of a two month old infant.

"My daughter called me and she was frantic on the phone, said her husband got shot," he said. "She said 'come right now dad, come right now.'"

Homicide detectives were at the scene early Tuesday. Authorities haven't given a description of any suspects.

"The young man is a great young man, I mean, anybody would love to have a kid like that as a son-in-law," Ricketts said. "I'm really, really, really hurt right now."

Homicide detectives were at the scene early Tuesday. The incident is still being investigated.
