A convicted felon with a history of resisting police with violence allegedly shot a man Sunday -- and then got in a standoff with SWAT members who used a riot gun on him to force his surrender, Fort Lauderdale police say.

Jamichael Warner, 23, sought shelter at his Fort Lauderdale home after the shooting, and taunted police from there, police said.  He repeatedly stepped outside the home to make hand gestures at officers in the shape of a gun, according to Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman Detective DeAnna Garcia.

Because of Warner’s resistance, SWAT members used their department-issued “less-than-lethal” riot gun on him, police said. Such weapons discharge thick slugs -- typically made of rubber or polyurethane -- that are intended to knock down criminals, but not kill them.

“The suspect was struck a couple of times before surrendering to officers on scene,” Garcia said.

Warner was taken into custody on one count each of aggravated battery with a firearm, possession of firearm by a convicted felon, display of firearm during a commission of a felony and violation of probation.

Last year, Warner began serving three years of community supervision for carrying a concealed firearm, resisting an officer with violence and grand theft motor vehicle, state records show.

Sunday's shooting victim, Antonio Brinson, 33, of Lauderhill, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition, Garcia said. He was expected to recover, Garcia said.

The events began in the 3400 block of West Broward Boulevard about 10:25 a.m., when Warner and Brinson got in a verbal dispute, and Warner shot him, police said.

As Warner ran away, “he pointed the firearm toward the sky and fired a couple shots into the air,” Garcia said.

Several residents present during the shooting helped by telling officers that the shooter had ran into a nearby home, police said. They described the shooter’s clothes. And when the suspect was captured, the residents were able to “positively identify” him as the shooter, Garcia said.
