Officials are investigating after three men posing as FBI agents stole money from a safe in a Hialeah home.
The men were wearing raid jackets and police hats as they forced their way into the home at 3591 West 74 Place, Hialeah Police spokesman Carl Zogby said.
They held five adults at gunpoint, ransacking the house and grabbing the cash from the safe.
"They were looking for it, but apparently they found it," Zogby said. "I don't know how much money was in there, but they grabbed what they could and left."
The suspects fled in a white Hummer.
Skeptical neighbors warned that residents need to be alert in an age where anyone can get their hands on clothing that appears to be official.
"If they're claiming to be somebody they need to show you proper ID," one neighbor said.
In this case, police say the residents didn't get a chance to ask questions and did the right thing by letting the suspects in.
"At that point you have to cooperate," Zogby said. "You're not going to resist -- whether they're cops or the bad guys -- if they've got the jump on you. They did the right thing and it probably saved their lives."
Officials said there were no injuries, although the crooks did tie up one of the victims. Detectives are now trying to determine whether the home was targeted and, if so, why.
"A large percentage of these cases are not random," Zogby said. "They are targeted because someone believes you have cash in the house or something of value."
