The Miami Police Department on Monday released surveillance images of a pair of men robbing up The People's Mini-Mart near Northwest 63rd Street and 7th Avenue in Miami.
The duo is suspected of robbing a 7-Eleven near Hiatus and Pembroke Roads in Miramar as well. The robberies both happened in the early hours of February 9th. In both cases, the robbers conceal their faces. One wears a black jacket with a gray hood. The other, a striped red, black and white jacket.
Surveillance video from the Miramar stick-up shows one man pointing a hand-gun, his partner aiming a shotgun, as they enter the store. Police say they have a violent MO too. Miramar Police believe they pistol-whipped a female employee. In Miami, police say the crooks shot the store clerk over ten times, even though the employee did what they asked.
"He gives them their cash, they begin to pistol whip him. He's fighting for his life, takes the gun away from the subjects, at which point the other subject shoots the victim with a shotgun in his chest," said Sergeant Freddie Cruz with the Miami Police Department.
And they didn't stop there.
"One of the subject tells the other subject 'let's just finish him off. Let's kill him,'" said Cruz.
The victim, 49-year-old Shawgi Mohamed, miraculously survived. A coworker says he is hanging on to life at Jackson Memorial Hospital. A native of Sudan, Mohamed has few family members in Miami. His loved ones were traveling from Atlanta to South Florida to be by his side.
"I hope everything goes right, that's all I care about, I hope everything goes well," said Mohamed Shareif, the victim's boss. "You can't come and shoot somebody just like that. You get the money and go. Why you gotta shoot someone and kill him, or whatever?"
The pair is believed to have driven a black Ford pick-up truck seen pulling into the 7-Eleven in surveillance video. Police are now dusting that truck for fingerprints but still have no sign of its occupants.
"Right now, we need to capture these individuals and take them off the streets before they strike again," said Cruz.
Police describe the suspects as two men ages 18-28. They are about 5'8-5'10. If you know anything that can help detectives, you can call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS, or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
