A 21-year-old suspect was arrested Thursday in the murder of a man at a Miami bus bench the day before, Miami Police said.
Zackary Joshua McGriff faces charges of first-degree murder with a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and carrying a concealed firearm in the death of Juan Augustine Lorenzo Gonzalez, 36, police said.
McGriff was being held without bond early Friday. It wasn't immediately known whether he has an attorney.
Late Wednesday afternoon, the victim was shot while sitting on a bus bench near Northwest 14th Avenue and Northwest 36th Street, police said. He tried to get help but collapsed and died while attempting to cross Northwest 36th Street, according to police.
Multiple witnesses described the person they saw racking the firearm and running from the scene. In addition, the shooter was followed by a witness who gave police accurate information about where the suspect fled afterward, police said in an arrest affidavit.
Police said that on Thursday McGriff’s mother provided homicide detectives with the handgun that was used in the shooting. She said that McGriff gave her the gun and then left the home, after saying that he was going to a center for behavioral health at Jackson Memorial Hospital to commit himself, the affidavit said. He was apprehended there by Miami-Dade Police on an unrelated charge, police said, and was wearing the clothing described by witnesses on Wednesday – a white T-shirt and black shorts.
The Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Lorenzo Gonzalez died from a single gunshot wound and that his death was a homicide, the affidavit said. McGriff was subsequently arrested on the first-degree murder charge, it added.
