Bad weather put a damper on plans to shut down the Alton Road flyover.

The bridge connecting the MacArthur Causeway to Alton Road was supposed to be shut down starting Sunday night, but officials waited for the rainy weather to end before getting the project underway Monday night.

It is sure to cause some headaches for drivers trying to get into Miami Beach.

Osbaldo Alvarez lives in Miami Beach. He does a lot of construction work and needs to get to Home Depot often.

He said, “It will be an impact for all of the residents of Miami Beach. It will be hard for me to get to where I need to go.”

Neighbor Rene Deltoro said, “There's going to be a lot of traffic that’s going to make us late for work or wherever you need to go.”

The area set to be impacted is Miami Beach as soon as you get off the causeway.

The project is going to replace the guardrail, base of the flyover and create faster water drainage.

Miami Beach resident Katie Hotra said, “There is a little flooding in that area for sure.”

Deltoro said, “It definitely might be a good idea but it's is going to affect us.

If you need to take the causeway into Miami Beach here are some tips: If you're traveling east on MacArthur Causeway to north on Alton Rd. continue on 5th Street and turn on Alton Rd.

If you’re driving south on Alton Rd. to E. 5th Street turn east on 8th Street, south on Lenox Avenue, then turn east on 5th Street.

Hotra said, “Yeah, I’ll avoid it.”

The owner of Oliver’s Bistro located close to where the project is set to take place is Hagen Taudt. He hopes this project can finish quickly with minimal impact to his business.

“Certain repairs need to be done. What can you do about it? Let’s see what happens tomorrow when I come into work. Tomorrow I can tell you if I hate it or not," he said.

The route out of Miami Beach in that area is not going to change.
