A man was arrested after he was caught on camera stealing two UPS boxes with party supplies after they had been delivered to a South Miami home, police said.
The incident happened on June 27 at about 2:30 p.m. after a UPS truck dropped off party supplies to the home on Twin Lakes Drive. Police say moments later Carlos Chaviano Gutierrez, 23, pulled up to the driveway in his pick-up truck and took the boxes.
South Miami Police Major Rene Landa said the homeowner had an excellent surveillance system that captured the entire crime.
"The man stops the truck perfectly in front of the camera where it says awning and it has the phone number of the company, " Landa said, explaining that Chaviano's truck had his company phone number written on it, and it was visible in the video. Landa said the man's face was also clear on the video and they were able to run it thru a face recognition program. "When I came back and looked it up with the drivers license it matched, it was a perfect fit."
After taking a look at the crystal clear video police called Chaviano on the same phone number that appeared on the truck, which happens to belong to his own awning company. He went in to the South Miami Police Department where he was told he was wanted for the theft of the party supplies valued at less than $80.
Major Landa said Chaviano first denied being involved in the theft but after seeing the video " he said that he did it."
Chaviano was arrested and appeared in bond court Tuesday on charges of petit theft and burglary of an occupied dwelling because the homeowner was actually home waiting for the package when it was taken from her front porch.
She is actually seen in the surveillance video coming out of her house a minute after her delivery was taken.
