A Florida Keys man who was released from custody after stealing a bike is now wanted on multiple counts of fraud and illegal use of credit cards, authorities said Friday.
Bond on Alex Bogomolny's outstanding warrant is $1.5 million, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.
Bogomolny, 41, first appeared on the sheriff's office radar when he stole a bike in Big Pine Key, authorities said.
When deputies were responding to the stolen bike call, they spotted it in Bogomolny's possession, the sheriff's office said. It had been stolen from the Tom Thumb Store while the owner was shopping.
When deputies questioned Bogomolny, they learned that he had debit cards with different names on them. He told deputies that he didn't know where they came from, the sheriff's office said.
But he later changed his story and said they belonged to his "business partner," the sheriff's office said.
Authorities seized 24 cards with four different names on them.
The bike's owner ended up not pressing charges, and Bogomolny was released. However, the case was referred to detectives to investigate the debit cards.
A deputy went to Bogomolny's house on Les Rhode Drive in Ramrod Key. In his trash, the deputy found mail that appeared to be from credit and debit card companies addressed to other people. When the sheriff's office contacted the people the mail was addressed to, they all said they didn't give Bogomolny permission to have their mail or any kind of credit or debit cards in their name, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office obtained a warrant for his arrest, charging him with trafficking in counterfeit credit cards, dealing in credit cards of another person and two counts of criminal use of personal identification, was obtained for his arrest.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of the Florida Keys at 1-800-346-8477.
