A woman was struck and killed by a train in Aventura Tuesday morning when she tried to drive around the railroad crossings, police said.

The incident happened just before 2:30 a.m. in the 17600 block of the Florida East Coast Railway at Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 179th Street, Aventura Police said.

A preliminary investigation showed the railroad crossings were functional but that the woman, who was in her 70s, tried to drive around them in her white Mercury Grand Marquis when she was struck, police said.
