A woman was struck and killed by a train in Aventura Tuesday morning when she tried to drive around the railroad crossings, police said.
The incident happened just before 2:30 a.m. in the 17600 block of the Florida East Coast Railway at Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 179th Street, Aventura Police said.
A preliminary investigation showed the railroad crossings were functional but that the woman, who was in her 70s, tried to drive around them in her white Mercury Grand Marquis when she was struck, police said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Her identity isn't being released pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities were at the scene early Tuesday conducting their investigation.
"We're just trying to determine a little bit more about what occurred," Aventura Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Goranitis said.
Police later determined the incident was a suicide.
