An endangered baby kangaroo is beginning to peek out of its mother’s pouch at Zoo Miami.
The Matchie’s tree kangaroo is still small and hairless and will continue to hide in her mother’s pouch for the next several months.
Although the baby kangaroo is just beginning to make its first appearances, zoo officials believe she was born about five months ago.
The first-time mother is 3 ½ years old and is on loan from the Brownsville Zoo in Texas and the 5-year-old father is on loan from the Bronx Zoo in New York, Zoo Miami said.
Once the baby is old enough she will go to the Brownsville Zoo and to become part of an international captive breeding program.
Zoo Miami has been a long time contributor to Matchie’s tree kangaroo conservation efforts in the wilds of New Guinea.
