More than a hundred tow trucks from all over South Florida formed a caravan in memory of driver David Herr.

Herr, 36, was shot and killed Tuesday at the St. Croix apartments at 4150 Northwest 34th St. in Lauderdale Lakes as he was towing a car.

"They are supporting my son," mother Mary Herr said. "All these people all came for him because they love him very much."

Mary Herr was overcome with emotion to see so many people honoring her son, who was a father of two and had worked for All County Towing for 10 years.

"He shouldn't have died the way he did," she said. "It shouldn't have happened and something should be done because they should be able to protect these guys that are just trying to do their jobs."

Authorities said the incident began when the apartment managers called All County Towing to remove vehicles that were not supposed to be on the property.

Herr was getting ready to tow a Jaguar from the property, when the car's owner, Triston Johnson, shot at him several times.

Terrified neighbors called police when they saw and heard the shooting. Calls to 911 reveal the chaos in the building as Johnson shot Herr in the head and opened fire at neighbors and later officials that were arriving on scene.

"He's seriously going to be missed by me, his friends, coworkers, family," said a friend of Herr's named Brian. "It's very devastating what happened to Dave and he was too good of a person to go out like that."

Johnson, who was hit as he was reloading his gun, remains hospitalized. He is expected to face charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder when he is released.
