A suspect in a fatal shooting in unincorporated Broward County was caught with the help of a K-9 officer Sunday night, authorities said.
The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Southwest 50th Avenue, Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Jachles said.
The BSO transported the 23-year-old victim to Broward Health Medical Center where he later died from his injuries, Jachles said.
According to Jachles, the suspect tried to get away in a pickup truck but was stopped by deputies. When the man tried to flee on foot, the K-9 caught up to him.
"The suspect made a decision to flee and he was quickly apprehended by a canine unit," Jachles said.
The encounter with the K-9 left the suspect hospitalized with unknown injuries.
"Canines are taught to apprehend suspects, if you fight, if you resist, the dog will keep you there and try and get you to stop resisting," Jachles said.
Between 10 and 15 people were standing near the shooting but no one else was hurt. Authorities haven't released the identities of the victim or suspect.
