Tropical Depression 5 formed over the far east Atlantic Ocean Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
As of 11 p.m., the storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph as it moved west-northwest at 14 mph about 80 miles southeast of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A tropical storm warning was issued for the southern Cape Verde Islands. The tropical depression should move to the south and southwest of those islands on Thursday, forecasters said.

Some strengthening is possible during the next 48 hours. The system is expected to become a tropical storm on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.
