An abandoned newborn baby was found outside wrapped in a blanket in Pompano Beach Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

A mother walking home with her child from a nearby daycare found the male newborn, who is approximately 1 to 3 days old, by some hedges in an empty parking lot at 200 NE 2nd St, Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Jachles said.

The baby was sleeping at the time. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue took the newborn to Fort Lauderdale's Holy Cross Hospital, where he is in good condition, Jachles said.

The baby appears to have been born outside of a hospital setting based on its umblical cord, which was not a surgical cut, Jachles said.

He emphasized that mothers that do not want their newborns should take them to safe haven locations such as fire stations or hospitals.

The BSO initially reported that the baby was found in a stroller.

Special victims unit detectives were investigating, the agency said.

The BSO asks that if anyone knows a female who was pregnant and no longer has the child, or knows a female who appears to have lost weight suspiciously, to call it or Broward Crime Stoppers. The phone number for the latter is 954-493-8477, and calls may be made anonymously.
