A man was charged with animal cruelty after authorities saw him kicking his pit bull while biking along State Road 84, The Broward Sheriff's Office said.

James Patten, 41, was being held in Broward County jail without bond Thursday. It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney.
Patten had been on probation for a separate animal cruelty case, was caught by two Broward sheriff's detectives who were traveling eastbound along State Road 84 in an unmarked vehicle, authorities said.
According to the police report, they found him sitting on a bicycle on the Interstate 95 overpass, kicking the dog named Sandy.

Patten kicked the dog on the left side of her ribcage, with so much force that it sent the dog into the overpass’ safety wall, about 18 inches away, the report said.

After being kicked, the pit bull then put her head down, crouched low and tucked her tail between her legs after being kicked, the report said.
Broward County Animal Control took custody of the dog.
