Two men were killed and another was in critical condition after a scissor lift they were working on collapsed at Port Everglades Friday morning, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

Kenneth Krason, 49, and Mark Freeman, 51, died in the incident, the BSO said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The third victim, 49-year-old Thomas Fischer, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with critical injuries, authorities said.

BSO spokesman Mike Jachles said the high-reach platform collapsed at Berth 1, trapping the three workers around 10:40 a.m.

The BSO said the workers were performing maintenance on a bridge used by passengers to get off ships when the lift collapsed. The men fell about 40 feet to the pavement, the BSO said.

The Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Technical Response Team was at the scene as authorities investigated the cause of the collapse.

Freeman and Fisher had been on the job just give days, while Krason has been a county employee since 1991 and had worked at the port since 1997, the BSO said.
