Authorities said they removed a 20-year-old woman from a car in a Lauderhill canal Sunday.

The woman was found dead in the driver’s seat in a canal on the 4800 block of University Drive Sunday morning, Lauderhill Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Jerry Gonzalez said.

The police and fire departments responded after getting calls from passersby about a car in the canal at about 7:30 to 8 a.m., Lauderhill Police Lt. Gregory Solowsky said.

It remained unclear when the Dodge Avenger SXT went into the water, however. Investigators are trying to create a timeline and figure out where the driver was coming from and going to, Solowsky said.

He said responding officers could see the top of the vehicle in the canal, which he estimated is 10 to 12 feet deep. They broke a window and pulled out the driver, who was already dead, Solowsky said.

It does not appear that the car hit its brakes at a high speed, or that another vehicle hit the Avenger and pushed it into the canal, he said.

Authorities removed the car from the water later on Sunday.

Lauderhill Police’s traffic homicide unit is investigating. Police ask anyone who was driving south on University Drive at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday that may have seen what happened to call them with any information at 954-497-4700, Solowsky said.
