A once-distressed North Miami Beach apartment complex is getting an extreme makeover to provide dozens of low-income families with homes thanks to a pair of nonprofit developers and $8 million in federal stimulus funds.

The Harvard House Apartments at 2020 Northeast 169th Street have been transformed into an affordable housing community that will provide a new home for about 140 families.

The $8 million project is the work of Carrfour Supportive and the National Housing Trust with the support of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which revitalizes neighborhoods negatively impacted by properties that were foreclosed upon or abandoned after the recession.

North Miami Beach Mayor George Vallejo and other officials are expected to attend the 10 a.m. ceremony.
