A man accused of having weapons on Florida International University's main campus is out of jail on $10,000 bond.

A campus police officer arrested Avery Wilson, 30, early Thursday.

According to the police report, the officer noticed Wilson sitting in his Chevrolet Camaro in a parking lot about 3 a.m. Thursday.

The officer approached Wilson and asked if he had any weapons. Wilson first told the officer he had a handgun in the glove compartment, according to the report.

Later Wilson told the officer his AK-47 was in the Camaro's trunk, the report said. The officer impounded the two weapons.

Wilson is not a student at the west Miami-Dade campus.

He told NBC 6 he was dropping a friend off, and said he has a permit to carry a gun. But FIU's policy is no guns on campus.

Wilson, who faces two felony weapons charges, said he will hire an attorney to fight them.

Many students on campus didn't know about the incident on Thursday.

Freshman Santi Restrepo said he's not comfortable at all with weapons on campus.

"That's an AK-47, it's a heavy assault rifle and can inflict mortal wounds," Restrepo said.

Student Alexa Boyd was surprised.

"I don't know any normal people who would have anything like that in their car," she said.

Alberto Dominguez had a different opinion.

"A good policy for a school would be if you are armed, to register it with the school," Dominguez said. "I think more students ... should be armed to defend themselves against a mass shooting."
