Investigators have determined that the grenade a man was holding after he was fatally shot by police at Miami Dade College's North Campus was inoperative.
Police were called to Miami Dade College's North Campus Saturday afternoon after reports of a man brandishing a gun on a bus, said Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.
The man got off the bus at Northwest 114th Street and 27th Avenue where he was met by police. Officials said shots were fired and the man was wounded. When police approached the man to render aid, they saw a grenade in his hand, said Miami-Dade Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta.
Zabaleta said Sunday that the grenade was more of a novelty item after bomb squad investigators cleared the scene.
The man, who is still unidentified, died on the scene.
The incident did not affect the school which was closed during graduation exercises, said MDC Director of Communications Juan Mendieta.
