A fugitive wanted for murdering another man in California in 2006 was arrested in Coral Gables Wednesday, the FBI said.

Edgar Alvarez, 33, was taken into custody agents with the FBI's South Florida Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force, who were working with the Coral Gables Police and Secret Service, the FBI said.

Alvarez was wanted in the shooting death of Emeon Hernandez inside a restaurant in Moreno Valley, California, on Dec. 29, 2006, the agency said.

According to the FBI, Alvarez and Hernandez had been arrested for money laundering in Chicago about three months before the shooting.

Alvarez fled California in early 2007 and is believed to have fled to Mexico before returning to the United States in 2009. He is believed to have spent time in Las Vegas, Tennessee and Florida before investigators discovered he was in the Miami area, the FBI said.

Alvarez was being held at the Dade County Detention Center and is expected to be taken back to California in the near future to face a murder charge, the FBI said. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
