An 11-year-old special needs student was found with a gun at a Doral elementary school Friday, Miami-Dade school officials said.

The fifth-grader at the John I. Smith K-8 Center had a gun and showed it to a friend, who told the teacher, and the gun was then confiscated, officials said. No one was injured.

The incident occurred Friday morning at the school at 10415 NW 52nd St. in Doral.

"I’m really concerned, that’s the last place that I would ever imagine that would have a situation like this,” parent Frederick Carrie said.

Boy Accidentally Shot at Redland School Is Out of Hospital

Most parents and teachers that NBC 6 spoke to as they were coming in and out of the school were not aware of what happened earlier.

“I did not know a thing about it,” physical education teacher Carlos Caro said.

For some people, the gun at school brought to mind recent situations with guns at school or on school property in Miami-Dade. Last Friday, a student at Redland Middle School was shot in the leg when the gun another student was allegedly carrying in his backpack went off. And in November, 13-year-old Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus lost her life after she was shot on a private Homestead school bus on her way to school.

“Now we have to deal with suspension and expulsion, but it’s also an opportunity to talk about what the school system should be doing in terms of educating parents as to the law,” Miami-Dade School Board member Raquel Regalado said.
