Whether it's building and programming robots, or learning to design video games, children can do it at summer camp.

Darin Koch, a South Broward High School teacher said: "I'm seeing a bunch of parents that instead of having their kids home, playing a game during the summer, they want to send their kid to a camp where they can get something out of it."

Koch teaches a version at Broward County Schools summer camp program. Lisa Woodard's 9-year-old son took it last year, and he's going again this summer.

"He loves computers. He loves mindcraft, and he was able to learn to build actual computer games and also have fun," Woodward said.

Both Broward and Miami-Dade schools offer dozens of academic enrichment programs combined with more traditional summer camp experiences.

"Both curriculum, sports and recreation, arts and crafts, a lot of them offer field trips," said Vic Ferrante, who runs Miami-Dade's summer programs.

In Miami-Dade, parents can choose from 91 half-day or full day camps that cost only $100 a week.

"As we all know, summer is a long time. We don't want children to lose what they've gained through the year, so because we offer subject area tutorials and subject area enhancements, it's a great opportunity for kids to retain what they've learned," Ferrante said.

"Research shows that there's a gap that takes place if kids do not do anything for a couple of months over the summer compared to the other kids that do," Koch said.

Besides keeping kids on track, summer camps keep kids out of trouble.

"And it's really fun to do the programming and designing," said Logan Koch.

It's not too late to sign your kids up. Both counties have plenty of spots available. Click here to find out about Miami-Dade County and Broward.
