For 15-year-old Brandon Reid, what started out as a celebration ended in a big scare and a trip to the hospital.

Reid was hit behind the ear by a stray bullet Thursday as he sat in his mother's Miramar apartment watching the Miami Heat's Championship win.

"I felt like I got hit with a big rock by a baseball pitcher," Reid said.

Reid, who lives in Georgia with his father, is in South Florida for the summer visiting his mother and half-brother. His father rushed down from Georgia when he got the news.

"It's the last thing you ever want to hear," Marvin Reid said. "The reality of it: today they pulled a 9 millimeter slug out of my son's head."

Luckily, the bullet got stuck behind his son's ear.

"[It's] one of the thickest places in the skull," said pediatric surgeon Dr. Dean Hertzler. "It lodged against the bone there and cracked it, but it didn't go through."

Reid's little brother said he knew his brother would pull through.

"I know my brother is stronger than a bullet," Daryl Denson Jr. said.
