The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a woman who they say is a person of interest in last month's hit-and-run crash on Bird Road that killed a man and injured his wife.
Fara Zaldivar, the owner of a 2004 silver Cadillac Escalade that was involved in the July 23 crash, was named a person of interest Thursday by the FHP.
Carlos Jesus Pildain, 67, of Miami, and his wife, Dixiana, were struck by the SUV around 1 a.m. on Bird Road and Southwest 97th Avenue. Carlos Pildain was killed and Dixiana was rushed to Kendall Regional Hospital.
Police said surveillance video captured a fleeting image of the the impact of the crash before the SUV took off. The car was later found at Blue Lakes Elementary School in the area of 9250 SW 52nd Terrace.
Carlos Pildain's stepson made a tearful plea last week for information in finding the driver.
"I can't understand it. I know we all make mistakes. Sometimes we put ourselves in situations we wish we hadn't but there's no excuse for what they did. They just left him there to die," Ramses Herrera said.
FHP investigators said Zaldivar's family has not been cooperating with police.
"Traffic investigators have exhausted all means of trying to locate this individual and we feel that it is important to find this individual and interview her in this traffic investigation," FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez said.
The FHP is asking anyone who may know where Zaldivar is or any other information in the case to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
